A completely legit question asked by one of Karl's students. Sometimes its impossible to tell. It a tough subject to breach because I think often times people are anxious to see if they are making progress. My understanding of drawing is that its a craft and perfecting a craft can take years...And even then progress isn't guaranteed.
Here are a bunch of sketches from Karl's Thursday night Fundamental Figure Drawing class. Karl said the biggest thing I need to work on is structure. Its true. Most times, I get so carried away with all the playful flowing curves of the muscles and fat that I forget to add the points of articulation and bone structure to hang them on.
These are great! 7, 10 and 15 are my personal choices. Must be rewarding after a semester to see the progress. Yes, I agree; it's tough. A teacher/mentor of mine once said if you're not running into walls at least once a month, you're not trying hard enough. I think about it a lot, and it's true; when you hit those walls it's frustrating, but when you get over them you def begin to see progress and realize how far you've come, even if it's just in terms of understanding or "seeing".
ReplyDeleteThanks K! Couldn't agree more! Figure drawing just never gets any easier. I dont get it! But I guess those are the "walls" talking..
