The Shadow Side

I believe it was Carl Jung who pioneered the term "Shadow Side" of the personality. I can't take credit for this sketch. It was done based off of an illustration my friend Marco sent me a while ago, although sadly I never got the artist's name. So he/she created this terrifying HR Giger looking illustration that inspired me to make this drawing. I was thinking this could be a manifestation or visual representation of a person's shadow side.

Mark

Mark is an elderly model who is super lean and thus kind of a challenge to draw. I noticed a lot of people packing up and leaving early when he showed up about an hour into the class. I guess folks don't like a challenge? Which I can understand if you're there as just a hobby or way to unwind. Drawing Mark is def very technical and again kind of a challenge. No pretty flowing lines or forms to depict. But I suppose if one wants to get better they have to draw all kinds of things, not just what they feel like drawing. Def not a softball night...

I also found out tonight that I am the worst model. Mark was late so Karl asked a few of us in the class to pose as head models. I practically fell asleep under the stage lighting during my time up there thus pissing everyone off and somewhat making an arse out of myself. Note to self never volunteer for something like that again, LOL.

Automotive Technology

So I'm taking an Automotive Repair class at night on Mondays and Wednesdays at Monrovia Adult Ed. The reason for taking this class is twofold. A) I've always been fascinated by cars and wanted to be mechanically inclined. B) To conduct valuable research for the story I am writing, which takes place in the world of gearheads, grease monkeys, daredevils, street racers and chop shops. All of this stuff will inform my writing and lend it a degree of authenticity that I never would have achieved by simply reading books or researching stuff on the internet alone. So far the class has been fascinating. First is a picture of Moe's car. He is the resident welder and custom parts fabricator. Next is another guys beamer up on the lift. Finally, below is a picture of the crew working on a 2004 Dodge stratus which Mr.M (our instructor) described as a "project vehicle."

I guess if there was a 3rd reason for taking the class it would be that I'm tired of getting ripped off on repairs, and having these skills will help set me free from expensive repair bills. So YEAH!!! Wish me luck!

Siren Concept

Worked on a super cool short film this week for my friend Mark in NY. He's got great taste and killer style, so I really can't wait to see what this will look like when it's done. Below is some concept art for the villain...

Letting Go...

...Of what it looks like usually works wonders. Tonight I was a bit tired and out of it so I was just kind of focusing on a short hand and not being so tight and technical. I wanted more of a loose and gestural style. I'm also trying to focus more on composition and how to get the figures into an interesting layout on the page.
